Design Your Own Project

Design Your Own Project

Q For this project you will use the skills we have learned so far—recognizing ourselves as writers, thinking rhetorically, taking a position based on definitional inquiry, conducting research, etc.—to practice the critical thinking and research involved in your potential future career. The idea of this project is to select a format for presenting information that interests you and that best suits your personal career/educational goals. This assignment will give you a chance to explore the type of writing that is used in your desired field. -Your rough draft is due to the Peer Review #5 discussion board by the end of the day on Wednesday, February 19. -Your final draft is due to this submission link by the end of the day on Sunday, February 23. -Your essay should be 1,000 - 1,500 words and demonstrate your ability to document 2-3 scholarly sources appropriately (MLA/APA). Here are your choices for this project; PICK ONE: 1) PowerPoint/Prezi Research Presentation (on focused information and a solution to a particular problem regarding your desired field, involves writing a summary and a slideshow), 2) Design an experiment (for a study to be conducted as would be done in your field, involves writing a summary and completing a questionnaire), OR 3) Create a homepage (for a company/organization associated with your desired field, involves writing a summary and developing a wireframe). (For more detailed descriptions and requirements for these projects, see below.) • Each project type requires a written essay that summarizes the project creation and research and a project-specific component (PowerPoint/Prezi, IRB Questionnaire, or Homepage). Things to consider as you decide on a project: - What is my purpose? What are my interests within my field? -Who do I want to reach? Who is my audience? -How will I incorporate research? What kind of evidence will best support my claim(s)? -How much time will I need for this project? Do I have the appropriate technology? -How would my project be assessed and graded? What is being asked of me? PowerPoint/Prezi Research Presentation Option: You have chosen to do a PowerPoint/Prezi Research Presentation. For this assignment you will need to do research associated with your desired field of study/career path. Select a research topic that is associated with some aspect of the career you plan on pursuing. Find something that people in the field argue about. Enter a conversation; take a position. You are not just informing your audience about the profession. Your aim here will be to report your findings on your topic, inform the audience about the topic, present problems associated with the topic, offer possible solutions, and persuade listeners to adopt the point of view you have gained in your research. Requirements: -Use rhetorical elements (ethos, pathos, logos) to demonstrate how the subject is important to you and your audience. -Use research materials to develop and support your key issues. -Use 10-12 slides, at least one with the presenter’s names and one with your sources. -Incorporate 2-3 visuals (pictures, charts, graphs, tables, etc.) Hypothetical Experiment Option: You have chosen to design a hypothetical experiment. For this assignment you will need to plan a research study associated with a topic relevant to your desired field of study/career path. Your aim here will be to plan a hypothetical experiment that can be conducted. You will not actually need to execute the experiment, so feel free to think as big as you want. You will need to do research to see if similar experiments have been conducted in the past and how you can build on others’ ideas and experience. With this project you are trying to convince (using rhetorical elements) the Northern Kentucky University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB), a real group of people assigned to evaluate the safety of student researchers' ideas, to allow you to conduct an experiment of your design. Fill out the IRB questionnaire located in the Week 6 module on our Canvas homepage-- there are separate questionnaires for if your experiment involves human testing or not. Requirements: -Complete a detailed IRB questionnaire. -Write a summary of your experiment that tells how the subject is important to your audience, how you would persuade the IRB, and how your experiment will further your field of study. -Use research to see what experiments like yours have been conducted before and what information is already out there. -Demonstrate your knowledge of ethos, pathos, and logos by persuading the IRB to accept your experiment. Homepage Option: You have chosen to create a homepage for a hypothetical business you may work for/operate in the future. For this assignment you will need to come up with a fictional company that does business in your desired field of study/career path. Your aim here will be to create a homepage for the company as if you were the owner of the business or an employee in their tech and public relations department. You will need to do research to find out how this company connects with their consumers, if there are any controversial issues surrounding the company, and what is important to them when dealing with the public. You will then create a homepage that allows users direct access to all of the company’s important links. Use the summary portion of your project to explain in detail why you chose to include the elements you did and what I would find if I clicked on the links available. Requirements: -Create a homepage. You can use Wix.com, Weebly.com, , Dreamweaver etc.). Include navigation bars, banners, menus, links to social media, indicate graphics, etc. -Incorporate rhetorical elements (ethos, pathos, logos) to demonstrate how the company is important to your audience. -Use research materials to see what similar companies are doing with their websites and to develop and support your company's key values. -Your summary should tell what is on the page, why it is there, and explain your major design choices. « Ideas for sources that work well for this project: -PowerPoint/Prezi: Research issues that are talked about or argued about in the workplace or field of study. Who is involved? What are they saying? What’s your side? Develop your claims and find evidence to back up those claims. -Experiment: The scenario is to convince the IRB that your experiment is safe and beneficial to society. What similar experiments have already been conducted? What was the result? How is your experiment different, or how does it build off of existing research? -Homepage: You should research companies, institutions, businesses, etc. that are like the ones you want to work at someday. What do those places think is important enough to put on their homepages? What issues are customers or clients interested in? What information should and shouldn’t they see on a homepage? …plus any other relevant information you find. And, remember that pictures, charts, graphs, and any other visual elements you find need citations too! Use this link to submit the final draft of your DYOP as attachments. You should have a summary and some other element (a PP or Prezi slideshow, a completed IRB questionnaire, or a homepage). You can attach more than one document to your submission. **If you created a homepage or Prezi: To insure that I will be able to view the page, please don't forget to include your URL in your summary essay. You can also take a screenshot by pressing Alt+Prt Sc, then paste the image into your text document by clicking "Paste" in your right-click drop-down menu or by pressing Ctrl+v. I have worked in two different hospitals for many years. While I am not a nurse or doctor, I always looked at the pager system like it was old and out of date. With all the new technology that has been introduced most hospitals and nursing homes have a pager system instead of some new kind of technology. I think using new technology in communication systems could be beneficial in any medical environment. I have worked in the Information technology field as well as a head administrator of a few different departments. I think new technology would help in many aspects of working in a medical environment. Not only could time be saved which is very value, but also the possibility of saving lives.
